Daisy Ridley, the 30-year-old actress best known for her portrayal of Rey in the latest Star Wars trilogy, has officially announced her return to the franchise at the Star Wars Celebration event in London on Friday (07.04.23). Ridley expressed her excitement to reprise the role of Rey in an upcoming film set 15 years after 2019’s ‘Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.’
The upcoming film, directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, will explore the story of rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the forces that rise against it. Obaid-Chinoy shared her enthusiasm for the hero’s journey and the need for more heroes in the world. In preparation for the film, the director has been immersing herself in a Jedi Academy alongside a powerful Jedi master.
Daisy Ridley made a surprise appearance on stage during the event, saying, “My heart is pounding. I’m very thrilled to be continuing this journey.”
The Star Wars Celebration also revealed two other films in development. One film will be directed by James Mangold, the filmmaker behind ‘Logan’, and will explore the story of the first Jedi to wield the Force and harness it as a liberating power during a time of chaos and oppression. The second film, helmed by ‘The Mandalorian’s executive producer Dave Filoni and producer Jon Favreau, will be set in the present and follow the escalating war between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic. This film promises to bring together many of the threats from the original Star Wars series.
This announcement comes just a few weeks after Daisy Ridley told The Hollywood Reporter that she had “no idea” if she would ever return to the Star Wars universe. She explained, “I feel like Rey’s story ended in a wonderful way with the last film (‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’).” Ridley also reflected on the personal growth and changes that have occurred since the film’s release three years ago, stating, “I feel like quite a different person. We’ve all gone through a massive change in the last three years, with lots of crazy things happening.”
Despite her uncertainty about returning to the franchise, Ridley expressed her love for the experience and the people she had the opportunity to work with. Now, fans eagerly await the return of Rey in this new chapter of the Star Wars saga.
